Jury Awards $550,000 to Teens Trapped on Malfunctioning Portland Amusement Park Ride

A jury awarded two teenage girls $275,000 each after they were trapped upside down on the AtmosFEAR ride at Oaks Park in Portland for nearly 30 minutes in June 2024. The 10-2 jury verdict held Oaks Amusement Park and the ride's manufacturer jointly responsible for the $550,000 total settlement. Fox 5 Vegas reported that the malfunction left all 30 riders stuck while Portland Fire and Rescue crews worked to bring them safely to the ground.
On a summer day in June 2024, the AtmosFEAR ride at Oaks Amusement Park in Portland suddenly stopped working. The spinning ride left 30 people hanging upside down, including the two teenage girls who later sued. Wave 3 reported that rescue crews from Portland Fire and Rescue had to carefully lower the riders to safety over the course of nearly 30 minutes.
After the incident, the two teens filed lawsuits seeking damages for their experience. A jury voted 10-2 that both Oaks Amusement Park and the company that made the ride were responsible for what happened. WSAW stated that the jury awarded each girl $275,000 to compensate them for their trauma and distress during the malfunction.
The amusement park said it considers the legal case resolved and plans to keep working with ride manufacturers and state inspectors. WILX reported that Oaks Park remains committed to making sure all riders stay safe on their attractions. The families of the affected teens expressed relief that the jury sided with their daughters and acknowledged the seriousness of the malfunction.
