Korean Partnerships Propel Nevada's Rhyolite Ridge Lithium Project, Bolstering US Supply Chain

Ioneer has signed non-binding memorandums of understanding with South Korea's KIND and Hyundai Engineering to help advance its Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron project in Nevada, according to Mining Weekly. The deals could bring equity investment and engineering expertise to a project backed by a roughly $1 billion U.S. Department of Energy loan guarantee, with total costs estimated near $2 billion.
Ioneer's managing director Bernard Rowe called the agreements a significant step, saying they bring "proven expertise" and move the project closer to a final investment decision and breaking ground, Mining.com.au reported.
Rhyolite Ridge sits in rural Nevada and hosts an unusually rare mineral called Searlesite, a sodium borosilicate that contains both lithium and boron in the same ore, according to Discovery Alert. That means the site can produce two finished products — lithium carbonate and boric acid — entirely on-site, with no need to ship raw ore elsewhere for refining.
The deposit is large enough to support a planned 77-year mine life, which is far longer than most lithium projects, Discovery Alert noted. Ioneer has already spent more than $220 million on the project since 2016 and completed over 70% of its advanced engineering work.
KIND — Korea's state-backed overseas infrastructure body — is exploring a direct equity stake in Rhyolite Ridge. Hyundai Engineering is evaluating a role in engineering, procurement, and construction, known as EPC. Both agreements are non-binding for now, MQ World reported.
Together, the two Korean partners would add financial firepower and construction know-how to a project that still needs a final investment decision before it can break ground. The $1 billion DOE loan guarantee provides a strong foundation, but the equity gap has been a key hurdle, according to TipRanks.
Both governments want to reduce reliance on China for critical minerals like lithium and boron. Rhyolite Ridge fits neatly into that goal. It would be one of the only domestic U.S. sources of both materials at scale, according to Mining Weekly.
Korea needs a secure supply of lithium for its electric vehicle and battery industries. The United States needs domestic production to meet growing demand. Executives on both sides framed the MOUs as a natural fit for shared strategic interests, MQ World reported.
If built, Rhyolite Ridge is expected to create 275 to 300 permanent jobs in a rural part of Nevada, according to TipRanks. Those would be full-time positions tied to mining and on-site processing operations that could run for decades.
The project's 77-year mine life and dual-commodity output set it apart from typical lithium operations, Discovery Alert noted. Industry observers say the combination of scale, rare geology, and U.S. government backing makes Rhyolite Ridge one of the most strategically valuable undeveloped mineral projects in North America.
