AMD Agrees to Acquire AI Startup World Labs in $8.2 Billion Deal

AMD has agreed to acquire AI startup World Labs in an all-stock deal valued at about $8.2 billion, one of the chipmaker’s largest acquisitions, with closing expected by the end of 2026 pending regulatory approval and other closing conditions. The deal adds World Labs’ spatial-intelligence research—AI that can create and reason about 3D environments—with potential uses in robotics, simulation and other applications. Co-founder Fei-Fei Li is expected to join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist after the transaction closes, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. AMD says the acquisition will strengthen its hardware, software and systems capabilities as it competes for expanding AI workloads. The stock-based structure conserves cash but could dilute existing shareholders.
AMD had already invested in World Labs’ February 2026 equity round alongside Nvidia and Autodesk, giving it an earlier look at the startup’s technology. World Labs had raised about $1.23 billion before the acquisition, including a $230 million seed round.
Before the deal, World Labs launched its Marble model in November 2025 and Atlas model in September 2026, targeting uses including gaming, robotics and virtual reality. It also acquired robotics-simulation startup SceniX in July 2026.
AMD’s World Labs purchase follows its August 2026 acquisition of inference technology company Taalas; together, the deals suggest a push to build a broader, end-to-end AI platform rather than focus only on selling chips.
AMD shares closed down 3.61% at $607.87 on the day of the announcement, after a mid-morning selloff erased earlier gains.
