Two teenage boys charged with murder in 70-year-old woman's shooting death

Two teenage boys have been charged with murder in the shooting death of 70-year-old Sherri Mitko, who was found dead inside her Kentucky home on Aug. 12, according to WILX. Deputies arrived at her residence on Lower Line Creek Road in Pulaski County just after midnight for a welfare check and discovered her body with multiple gunshot wounds.
Pulaski County Sheriff Bobby Jones announced the arrests on Aug. 16 after a four-day investigation. He called the killing an "isolated incident" and said there is "no public safety risk at this time," according to WSMV. Neighbors remembered Mitko as "a sweet lady" who had recently lost her husband.
Mitko lived alone in a rural area about 15 miles northeast of Somerset, Kentucky. Sheriff Jones described the scene plainly: "She just lost her husband recently, there was forced entry to the house. And now she is deceased herself," according to KKTV. Investigators treated the case as a probable home invasion that turned fatal.
The response required several agencies. The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, the Coroner's Office, the Faubush Fire Department, local EMS, and even Animal Control all responded to the scene. Animal Control was called to secure dogs found inside Mitko's home, according to WALB.
Detectives from the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division worked the case from Aug. 12 through Aug. 16. They gathered enough evidence to charge two teenage boys with murder. Law enforcement has not released the suspects' names or exact ages because of their juvenile status, according to KY3.
An autopsy at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort confirmed Mitko died from multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities did not say how many shots were fired or whether the teens knew the victim, according to KAIT8.
Because the suspects are minors, the case will start in Kentucky's juvenile justice system. But prosecutors can ask to move it to adult court. Under Kentucky law, juveniles at least 14 years old who are charged with a felony involving a firearm can be tried as adults, according to WCAX.
If tried as adults, the teens would face long prison sentences. US Supreme Court rulings block the death penalty and mandatory life-without-parole sentences for minors. Prosecutors have not yet said publicly whether they will seek a transfer to adult court, according to WFSB.
Residents near Lower Line Creek Road expressed shock and grief after learning of Mitko's death. Neighbors described her simply as "a sweet lady." She had been widowed shortly before her killing, making the loss feel even more painful to those who knew her, according to KCBD.
Local residents voiced worry about safety in rural areas they long considered peaceful. Some called for neighbors to watch out for each other. The Sheriff's Office kept its tip line open — 606-678-5145 — asking anyone with information to come forward, according to WNEM.
