New AI Memory Breakthroughs from ETRI and NUS Tackle Forgetting, Reshaping Future AI Governance

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) unveiled MemEIC at NeurIPS 2025, a technology that lets multimodal AI keep old knowledge intact while learning new things — directly tackling a problem called catastrophic forgetting, according to Newswise.

Catastrophic forgetting is a long-standing flaw in AI. When a model learns something new, it tends to overwrite what it already knew. ETRI's MemEIC fixes this by letting multimodal AI — systems that handle both text and images — retain previously learned knowledge as new knowledge is added, according to Newswise.
The technology is called Continual and Compositional Knowledge Editing, which is what "MemEIC" stands for. The research was presented at NeurIPS 2025, one of the world's top AI conferences. ETRI built it with two Korean universities, signaling a strong push from South Korea to lead in foundational AI research.
Most AI systems today use a simple method: retrieve a chunk of stored information, then reason from it. MRAgent throws that approach out. Instead, it rebuilds memory actively as the model thinks through a problem. The result is a 23% accuracy gain on complex reasoning tasks.
The cost savings are striking. MRAgent cuts prompt tokens from 632,000 down to 118,000 — a drop of more than 80%. That also means faster responses and lower computing bills. For companies running AI at scale, those numbers add up fast.
Memory-enhanced AI is not just a research story. Business strategists are framing it as a way for companies to store and reuse institutional knowledge — a so-called "second brain." One estimate holds that fielding around 800 questions a year eats up roughly 200 hours of founder time. A well-built AI copilot can hand those hours back.
That 200-hour gain equals about 10% of a standard 2,000-hour work year. Advisers say companies with strong AI memory systems become more attractive to buyers because they are less dependent on any single person. Founder dependency is a known risk factor in acquisitions, and AI that retains knowledge helps reduce it.
As memory AI grows more powerful, who oversees it matters. Governance experts argue that board directors should stop worrying about titles and start building real fluency in AI and technology risk. The advice: bring a distinct, additive perspective — on areas like cybersecurity, talent, or capital — rather than just a credential.
