Paris Police Request Diamond League Meet Cancellation Due to Historic Heat Wave Strain
Paris police are pushing to cancel this weekend's Diamond League track and field meet as a record-breaking heat wave chokes the French capital. Police Prefect Patrice Faure formally requested the cancellation on June 26, also targeting a scheduled Pride march and music festival, saying emergency services have hit "a saturation point in hospital facilities," according to AP News.
The heat wave has gripped France since June 21. On June 24, the country set a national average temperature record of 30°C (86°F) for the second straight day. Local temperatures hit 44.3°C (111.7°F) in parts of southwest France. More than 40 people have died, including 40 drownings by people seeking relief in open water, according to AP News.
Police Push to Cancel While Organizers Hold Firm
Faure's office warned organizers that if they refuse to comply, police will redirect all resources toward protecting the most vulnerable. The French Track and Field Federation (FFA), which runs the Diamond League meet at Stade Charléty, said it had not yet received the formal order and was still preparing for Sunday's event, AP News reported.
On June 25, organizers said the meet would go ahead in an "adapted format" open only to elite athletes — no general spectators. They argued this smaller footprint reduced pressure on emergency services enough to justify keeping the event on the calendar, according to Diamond League.
Hospitals Overwhelmed as France Shatters Temperature Records
Emergency rooms have seen a fourfold increase in heat-related visits. Cardiac arrest cases have surged nationwide. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu activated Plan ORSAN Level 2, mobilizing extra medical staff and reinforcing emergency coordination across the country, according to Connexion France.
Red alerts now cover a record 58 of France's departments. This marks the first time more than three-quarters of the country has been under the highest alert level at the same time. A 20% jump in emergency medical calls has been recorded across affected regions, AP News reported. More than 101 million Europeans are currently experiencing temperatures above 35°C (95°F).

The Paris meet is the eighth leg of the Wanda Diamond League, one of 15 marquee stops on the global tour. Top competitors currently in Paris include pole vault world record holder Mondo Duplantis, sprint world champion Noah Lyles, and 400m hurdles star Femke Bol. A cancellation would disrupt the points race for the Diamond League Final, according to AP News.
Rail operator SNCF has already canceled 71 long-distance trains due to track damage from heat expansion. The weekend cancellations extend beyond track and field — the Paris Pride march and several major music festivals face the same fate, affecting hundreds of thousands of attendees and tourists, AP News reported.
Scientists Link Record Heat Directly to Climate Change
A study released June 26 found climate change was "unequivocally" responsible for the record temperatures. UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell said the crisis has "the fingerprints of the climate crisis all over it," according to UN News. This is France's second heat wave of 2026, an unusual occurrence so early in summer.
Climate experts have compared the event to the August 2003 heat wave, which killed more than 14,800 people in France. Environmentalists say the disruption of a major sporting event is "a sign of things to come" — using the Diamond League standoff to press for faster action on climate policy, according to AP News.
