A fast-moving brush fire broke out in Santa Clarita on Tuesday afternoon, threatening homes and forcing evacuations near Centre Pointe Parkway. The Pointe Fire started around 1:40 p.m. and grew from roughly 5 acres to about 52 acres within hours, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Authorities issued an evacuation warning for the SCL-CARLBOYER zone as flames pushed toward residential and commercial areas. The fire broke out on the area's hottest day of an ongoing heat wave, making containment especially difficult, Yahoo News reported.
The fire ignited near 21300 Centre Pointe Parkway and spread quickly through dry brush, according to Yahoo News. Officials called a second alarm as flames moved toward homes. Dry conditions and record-level heat combined to push the fire's growth at a fast pace.
Crews faced one of the toughest firefighting conditions of the season. The blaze remained at zero percent containment as of late afternoon. Officials warned the situation could change quickly and urged residents to stay alert.
