Avelo’s Concord-to-Florida expansion is framed by executives as expanding access to three of the Charlotte-area’s most in-demand leisure destinations, highlighting the airline’s strategy to boost regional connectivity from Concord-Padgett.
Avelo Airlines announced four new nonstop routes on June 24, 2026, connecting Concord-Padgett Regional Airport to three Florida cities and Lakeland Linder International Airport to Puerto Rico. Tickets go on sale immediately, with fares starting at $49 one-way from Concord and $85 from Lakeland, according to WCCB Charlotte.
Service on all four routes launches in November 2026. The moves bring Avelo's total nonstop destinations from Concord-Padgett to 11, cementing the North Carolina airport as a key hub in the airline's low-cost network, News-Press reported.
Three Florida Cities Now Linked to Concord-Padgett
Avelo will fly from Concord-Padgett to Orlando (MCO) starting November 18, with four flights per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Fort Myers (RSW) follows on November 19 with twice-weekly service on Thursdays and Sundays. Tampa (TPA) launches November 20, also twice weekly, on Mondays and Fridays, according to WCCB Charlotte.
Avelo CEO Andrew Levy called Concord's growth a "big economic driver" for the Charlotte region. Chief Marketing Officer Scott DeAngelo said the routes "open the door to more sunny getaways" and make travel "easier and more accessible for families." Eric Pratt, aviation director at Concord-Padgett, cited "strong demand for affordable, convenient air travel" in the area.
Lakeland Gets Its First Direct Flight to Puerto Rico
Starting November 18, Avelo will fly nonstop from Lakeland Linder to Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico (BQN). The route runs twice weekly year-round, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It is the first direct connection for Polk County residents to the west side of Puerto Rico, Naples News reported.
Before this route, Central Florida travelers heading to Aguadilla had to drive to Fort Lauderdale or Orlando for a connecting flight. CEO Andrew Levy said the new service makes "exploring the island simpler than ever." Adam Lunn, interim director at Lakeland Linder, said Avelo "continues to listen to our community and respond with opportunities that matter."
Secondary Airport Strategy Powers Avelo's $49 Fares
Avelo built its model around smaller, less crowded airports. By flying out of Concord-Padgett instead of Charlotte Douglas (CLT) and Lakeland Linder instead of Orlando or Tampa, the airline avoids high landing fees and gate delays. That helps it keep fares as low as $49. Industry analysts call this a textbook "low-cost carrier secondary hub" approach.
The strategy took shape after a major reset in January 2026. Avelo closed bases in Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington, North Carolina, and named Concord-Padgett and Lakeland Linder among its five core strategic bases. The airline added a second Boeing 737-800 at Lakeland in February 2026 and now has 60 additional employees there. Lakeland has surpassed 350,000 total passengers since Avelo launched service in June 2024.
Economic Wins, But Not Everyone Is Celebrating
Concord-Padgett contributes an estimated $900 million to the local economy each year and supports about 5,000 jobs, according to a North Carolina DOT aviation report. Lakeland Linder's annual economic impact is even larger, at $1.5 billion. Local business owners in Concord say Florida visitors are already spending money at shops and restaurants near the airport.
But the growth comes at a cost for other communities. Residents in Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington lost Avelo service when the airline closed those bases in 2026. Some analysts also warn that Avelo has a history of cutting routes that do not quickly turn a profit, creating a "wait and see" attitude among travelers about whether these new year-round routes will last, Naples News noted.
