Airbus Unveils U145: An Uncrewed H145 Derivative Set for Early 2030s Service.

Airbus Helicopters’ CEO Matthieu Louvot said the company will “team[] up with leading autonomous mission partners to further expand the UAS ecosystem in Europe” as it develops U145 capabilities as a multi-mission unmanned system.
Airbus said the H145 baseline (which the U145 is derived from) is powered by two Safran Arriel 2E engines with full authority digital engine control (FADEC), signaling the unmanned program will build on a specific, production-proven engine/control architecture.
A key differentiator highlighted by Aeronaut Media is that, beyond avoiding development risk, converting a certified helicopter platform to autonomy could “reduce risk to crewed personnel during operations in active combat zones,” while Airbus also expects faster certification and a mature logistics/maintenance ecosystem from the start.
EuropeSays reported that the U145 program follows earlier Airbus work on the VSR700 (an unmanned aircraft derived from the Cabri G2), with the U145 distinct because it is based on a higher-volume helicopter platform rather than a smaller rotary-wing drone designed from the outset.
AVweb noted that Sikorsky has announced a similar unmanned-helicopter concept—“S-70UAS U-Hawk,” an autonomous version of the UH-60L Black Hawk that “replaces the crew stations and cockpit area for cargo access and autonomous operations”—indicating comparable industry efforts to remove cockpit stations in favor of autonomy.
Airbus Helicopters has unveiled the U145, a cockpit-free autonomous version of its popular H145 helicopter, at the ILA Berlin airshow on June 8. The company showed a full-scale mock-up and confirmed plans for a first flight — with a safety pilot on board — by the end of 2026, targeting entry into service in the early 2030s. Airbus CEO Matthieu Louvot said the U145 combines "the proven airframe, power and useful load of the H145 with the autonomy of a UAS."
The U145 carries up to 1,200 kg of cargo and has a maximum takeoff weight of 3,800 kg. It builds on an H145 fleet of more than 1,800 aircraft that has logged over 8.5 million flight hours, according to AVweb. Airbus says that heritage cuts development risk compared with designing a drone from scratch.
The most visible change from the crewed H145 is the removal of the physical cockpit entirely. In its place, Airbus added a nose-loading door, a foldable loading table, and a dedicated cargo floor. The result is an aircraft built around moving goods, not people, according to The War Zone.
Power comes from two Safran Arriel 2E engines with full authority digital engine control — known as FADEC — the same setup used in the standard H145. Army Technology reported the aircraft has a top speed of around 268 km/h, a cruise speed of roughly 241 km/h, and an endurance of about 3.5 hours on standard fuel tanks.
The U145 uses AI and sensor systems to fly and operate without a human pilot. Airbus has partnered with missile maker MBDA to develop what it calls a "drone mothership" role. In this setup, the U145 could launch smaller drones or loitering munitions — sometimes called air-launched effects — acting as a force multiplier for military units, according to AIAA.
Louvot said Airbus will "team up with leading autonomous mission partners to further expand the UAS ecosystem in Europe." Beyond combat, Airbus envisions the U145 handling disaster response, firefighting, surveillance, and logistics. Flying without a crew means it can enter smoke-filled or high-radiation areas too dangerous for human pilots, the company said.
A core argument Airbus makes for the U145 is that starting from a certified platform saves time and money. The H145 already has an approved design, a mature supply chain, and a global maintenance network. Aeronaut Media noted this approach could also "reduce risk to crewed personnel during operations in active combat zones" by replacing pilots with autonomy.
This is the second time Airbus has converted a crewed rotorcraft into an unmanned system. The first was the VSR700, derived from the smaller Cabri G2. EuropeSays noted the U145 is distinct because it is based on a far higher-volume, production-proven platform, which could speed up certification and lower integration costs from day one.
Airbus is not alone in stripping cockpits from proven helicopters. AVweb reported that Sikorsky has announced the S-70UAS "U-Hawk," an autonomous version of the UH-60L Black Hawk that "replaces the crew stations and cockpit area for cargo access and autonomous operations." Sikorsky says the U-Hawk offers 25% more cargo space than the standard Black Hawk.
In the U.S., Airbus itself is developing a parallel program called the MQ-72C Lakota Connector, working with partners Shield AI, L3Harris, and Parry Labs for the U.S. Marine Corps. That aircraft carries up to 4,000 lbs including slung loads. The European U145, by contrast, is framed as a sovereign program free from U.S. export controls, known as ITAR restrictions, according to The War Zone.
