UK Accelerates Long-Range Missile Development for Ukraine, Using Rapid Trials and F1 Technology

Britain has test-fired three new long-range missiles in the Hebrides designed specifically for Ukraine, with a target of delivering operational weapons to Kyiv by the end of 2026. The Sun reported that all three prototypes — named Crossbow, TigerShark, and SkyLance — flew during trials at the South Uist range, despite what officials called "some minor technical hiccups."
The missiles were built under Project Brakestop, a UK Ministry of Defence program that compressed years of normal procurement into months. The goal: a weapon that flies at least 500km, costs around £400,000 per unit, and can be made at a rate of 20 per month — a fraction of the cost of the Storm Shadow cruise missile, which runs over £2 million each, according to Yahoo News.

Army Technology reported that the first live flight tests took place on December 15, 2025, at the South Uist range in the Hebrides. Officials framed the minor problems as part of a deliberate "fail fast" philosophy — test hard, fix fast, scale up. A second phase of contracts is already underway to develop improved weapons and launch equipment.
Each of the three designs takes a different technical approach. Financial Times reported that MBDA's Crossbow uses an in-house visual navigation system. MGI's TigerShark uses a similar system built by Auterion, with no U.S.-sourced navigation data. Rotron's design is propeller-driven, trading speed for longer range.
MGI CEO Mike Gascoyne — a former Formula 1 technical director at McLaren and Renault — said the TigerShark uses F1 sensors to map the battlefield visually. That gives it a backup targeting system if Russia jams GPS signals. "Volume is the driver now," Gascoyne told Breaking Defense, adding that traditional defense development timelines are "gone."
Storm Shadow missiles carry U.S.-sourced components and mapping data. That means Britain has to ask Washington for permission before Ukraine can fire them at certain targets — a process that has caused repeated delays, according to Financial Times. Project Brakestop was designed from the ground up with zero U.S. parts, specifically to cut out that approval chain.
MBDA UK's Bill Beaumont said the requirement was for "freedom of manoeuvre and sovereignty" — meaning London and Kyiv could decide alone when and where to fire. Analysts at the Kiel Institute framed this as part of a broader European push toward what they call "ITAR-free" defense, driven by concern that U.S. domestic politics could veto the defense of a European ally, per UK Defence Journal.
The missiles are spec'd to hit targets at least 500km away and carry a warhead between 225kg and 300kg. That is roughly half the payload of a Storm Shadow, which carries about 450kg. But at £400,000 per unit — one-fifth the cost — the UK could supply far more of them. The production target of 20 per month means up to 240 weapons per year, according to UK Defence Journal.
Sun Herald reported that officials hope to deliver the first weapons to Ukraine within months. The official MoD target is late 2026. If that holds, Ukraine would gain a mass-producible tool to strike Russian logistics hubs and airbases more than 300 miles behind the front lines — on a near-daily basis rather than in rare, rationed strikes.
