Modern Warfare 4 Revamps DMZ with Hajin Zone and Enhanced Extraction Experience

Infinity Ward is bringing DMZ back in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 with a bigger, more cohesive extraction experience set after the campaign in a contested exclusion zone called Hajin near the Korean Peninsula and bordering Russia. Players operate as off-the-books CIA assets tasked with securing, recovering, or destroying valuable abandoned military technology while rival operators and shifting environmental conditions help make the “living world” change from match to match. The mode is built around three playstyles—narrative Story Missions, unpredictable Dynamic Operations with objectives that evolve each match, and Free Roam for open-ended exploration and interference. To address extraction-shooter frustration, the new MIA system lets players buy a rescue team after death to restore experience progress and redeploy using in-game currency. Combat pressure is managed through systems like the Star System, which increases enemy reinforcements based on aggressive performance and encourages stealth, while the Bounty System turns high-performing players into targets that others can track and hunt. Infinity Ward also emphasizes persistence between deployments through a hub FOB where upgrades expand capabilities and a stashed, persistent loadout inventory.
Infinity Ward says the Hajin exclusion zone forms after a catastrophic nuclear reactor meltdown, leaving the area “abandoned and contaminated by radiation” and spanning portions of South Korea, North Korea, and Russia.
For stealth and combat pressure management, the Star System is supported by explicit UI/AI feedback: the game will alert players when they’re “close to being spotted by AI,” and suppressors plus stealth kills are highlighted as ways to reduce threat.
The MIA system is paired with a built-in self-revive: every player starts each deployment with a tourniquet, described as giving a “self-revive option if you are downed by enemy forces.”
Infinity Ward is also promising a more tactical battlefield thanks to “improved AI combatants,” including coordinated enemy squads, reactive combat behaviors, and more dynamic infantry and vehicle encounters—along with rival factions and roaming patrols to help ensure operations unfold differently.
