Crossfire Reimagined as Story-Driven Tactical Shooter by Ex-Naughty Dog Devs, Debuts Adaptive Cover

At Summer Game Fest 2026, Smilegate’s CrossFire franchise was officially reimagined as a fully story-driven single-player tactical shooter, marking a major pivot away from its multiplayer-first identity. Developed by the new studio That’s No Moon, the game follows mercenary Layla Qassem on a reconnaissance contract in the Atlas Mountains that escalates into a fight for survival alongside a reluctant ally, Tier-One Operator Delroy Cross. The studio—built from ex-Naughty Dog and ex-Infinity Ward developers—aims to blend cinematic, character-focused storytelling with grounded, tactical combat. A key feature is the Adaptive Cover system, designed to let Layla dynamically adjust her stance based on terrain and enemy positions during both combat and traversal. Early reveals highlighted stealth, gunfights, and cinematic moments in a trailer, but a co-op or multiplayer mode has not been confirmed. Crossfire is slated for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a release date still pending.
That’s No Moon’s reimagining is described as a third-person shooter, not a first-person entry.
The Atlas Mountains mission escalates into an “existential threat,” with one outlet specifically describing it as “Snyder zombies.”
Game director Jacob Minkoff said Adaptive Cover lets Layla “dynamically respond to the complex terrain around her and enemy positions to adjust her stance to maintain cover,” describing it as an active skill to master.
The studio behind the project, That’s No Moon, was founded in 2021.
The reveal/coverage notes involvement of actress Claudia Doumit—known for Farah Karim in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Victoria Neuman in The Boys.
