Nightdive Studios Brings Thief: The Dark Project Remastered to Modern Platforms This Winter

At the PC Gaming Show, Nightdive Studios, Eidos-Montréal, and Atari announced Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, bringing the 1998 stealth classic to modern platforms this winter. Developed with Nightdive’s KEX Engine, the remaster preserves the game’s signature sound-and-shadow stealth while updating presentation and controls for today’s hardware. It will include the original Thief: The Dark Project plus content from Thief Gold, featuring expanded missions and additional replay value through multiple difficulty settings. The update also targets smoother play with quality-of-life additions such as a mission selector, a weapon/item wheel, custom campaign support, and improved controller features. Nightdive and Eidos-Montréal framed the project as a faithful revival meant to keep the original’s atmosphere and “pure stealth” influence on modern game design. The remaster is slated for PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and PC storefronts including Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.
The remaster spells out core enemy behavior upgrades: enemies can “hear sounds, talk to each other, and raise alarms if they spot you,” reinforcing Thief’s stealth-and-misdirection gameplay loop.
Nightdive/Eidos also detailed the remaster’s performance and presentation targets—supporting “4K resolution and up to 120 FPS,” alongside “improved textures, character models, and animations.”
Controls will be more than cursor tweaks: the game adds “controller rumble” and “motion or gyro controls,” alongside improved gamepad support.
Nightdive’s approach is tied to its corporate and technical setup: it is “a subsidiary of Atari SA” and typically uses its proprietary “KEX Engine” to modernize graphics and overhaul controls while maintaining the original experience.
For PC players, DSOGaming reports the announced minimum/recommended specs, including a baseline of an Intel/AMD Dual-Core at “2.0 GHz” with “2GB of RAM,” and a recommendation of an “Intel Core i5-2300” or “AMD Phenom II X4 945” with “4GB of RAM,” plus DirectX 11 or Vulkan 1.1 GPU support.
