Uppercut Games Unveils Magicians: The Devil’s Deal, a Dark Action Title Coming 2027

Magicians: The Devil’s Deal is a newly revealed first-person dark action game from Australian studio Uppercut Games, whose founders previously worked on BioShock. Set in a twisted late-Victorian stage world called Theatreland, the story follows Jacob Menteuro, a celebrated stage magician who’s cast into Hell after making a deal with the devil, and who must survive while confronting the rival “Masters” who betrayed him. The game blends exploration and atmospheric worldbuilding with high-stakes combat powered by stage-magic that’s both physical and reality-bending, including card-slinging weapons and combinations of arcane spells. Its art direction and overall vibe have been compared to Dishonored, with the theatre portrayed as a supernatural warzone where illusion becomes deadly. Uppercut has partnered with Focus Entertainment on the project, describing it as a new IP built around storytelling, deception, and creative approaches to fights. The release is planned for 2027, with Xbox Game Pass support noted at launch, though reports on broader platform availability differ.
Focus Entertainment’s deputy CEO, Vincent Chataignier, said the partnership is driven by the studio’s focus on “editorial DNA” and highlighted that Magicians: The Devil’s Deal’s “unique universe allows for original gameplay experiences.”
Uppercut co-founder Ed Orman said the team was inspired by “stage magic through 1890s posters,” describing them as “a rich, flamboyant vision filled with tricks, demons, and colourful characters,” and said Theatreland’s story is “shaped by deception and betrayal.”
Beyond card-slinging and spell combos, the game is described as letting players use abilities in combat in more concrete ways—e.g., “gravity can be bent,” and the devs specifically call out tools like chains that can trap enemies and cards that become “sharp projectiles.”
Platform details vary by report: one outlet states the game is planned as an “Xbox exclusive” launching on Xbox Game Pass at launch, while another says it’s coming to “PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S” (also on Game Pass at launch).
