Ace Combat 8 Celebrates 30 Years, Brings Accessibility and Classic Features

Bandai Namco has officially announced *Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve*, the first numbered entry in the legendary flight-shooting series in seven years — and its most ambitious title yet. Set for a global release on October 2, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the game serves as the franchise's 30th-anniversary flagship Inven Global.
Developed by the newly formed studio Bandai Namco Aces — a joint venture between Bandai Namco (51%) and ILCA (49%) — the game runs on Unreal Engine 5 and proprietary "Cloudly" technology. With *Ace Combat 7* having sold over 7 million units, expectations are high Sportskeeda.
Bandai Namco Aces was formed on July 1, 2022, specifically to lead high-end *Ace Combat* development. The studio brought back acclaimed writer Sunao Katabuchi, who wrote *Ace Combat 4*, *5*, and *7*. Brand Director Kazutoki Kono reportedly recruited him personally via social media Inven Global.
Producer Manabu Shimomoto acknowledged that *Ace Combat 7* was "somewhat difficult" for new players. The team has built improved tutorials and training modes to fix that. The goal, according to the developers, is to welcome newcomers without leaving veteran fans behind TechRadar.
The game is set in July 2029 in the fictional "Strangereal" universe. The Republic of Sotoa has captured Theve, the capital city of the Federation of Central Usea. Players step into the role of Jan "Rex" Cope, a pilot tasked with impersonating a legendary ace to keep public morale alive IGN.
Director Kazutoki Kono said the team wanted the game to be "a beacon of hope" — a theme shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic. Narrative Director Sunao Katabuchi is focused on "identity and duty" within a fractured military. The result is a story about media, myth, and the cost of living up to a legend TechRadar.
The proprietary "Cloudly" engine is one of the game's biggest technical leaps. In past games, clouds were mostly visual. In *Wings of Theve*, players can hide inside them, set up ambushes, or break enemy missile locks. Critics at the Los Angeles preview event played 6 missions and praised the tactical depth GamesRadar.
Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game runs with a level of visual detail new to the genre. ComicBook called the gameplay and graphics "excellent," comparing the aerial thrills to *Top Gun: Maverick*. The full *Ace Combat* franchise has sold 21 million units in 30 years, and this entry is Bandai Namco's biggest bet yet.
Bandai Namco announced the release date and pre-order bonuses on June 2, 2026. Buyers who pre-order get a free port of *Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War*, a beloved 2006 classic. The announcement was met with "unanimous acclaim" from the fan community, which had asked for a modern port for over a decade Sportskeeda.
Deluxe Edition holders get early access starting September 29 — three days before the October 2 launch. PEGI rated the game 16 in Europe for "violence and in-game purchases." A "Premium Ace Pass" hints at post-launch competitive content for veteran players who want a higher skill ceiling IGN.
