Star Trek Explores Psychological Horror with Shadow Frontier, Featuring Ro Laren in 2027

Bloober Team and Paramount Games have announced Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, a mature, story-driven third-person action-horror game set in the Star Trek universe. Players take on Ro Laren, portrayed again by Michelle Forbes, after she crashes onto a distant planet overtaken by a “strange consciousness” that turns the environment and even her own perceptions hostile. The game centers on survival and psychological horror as Ro investigates wreckage and twisted creatures, navigating a corrupted labyrinth that threatens to sever her connection to reality. While it includes familiar Star Trek tools like tricorders and phasers, developers say the title is a tonal shift toward a more intimate, high-stakes thriller rather than a traditional franchise entry. Scheduled for release in 2027, Shadow Frontier is planned for PC via Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The announcement trailer includes ominous narration, with one voice-over line warning: “this time there is no coming back from this,” as Ro explores a corrupted, seemingly sentient planet.
Paramount Games Studio senior vice president and head of creative/production Shawn Kittelsen said the studio was chosen so Bloober could “both honor that legacy and push it forward,” adding “We have full confidence in Bloober’s ability to deliver a game that does justice to the Star Trek name while bringing something bold and new.”
Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno framed the project as a fan-driven genre blend, saying: “By combining that passion with what we do best, horror, we've partnered with Paramount to create something truly unique… enriched with our own signature layer of dark, psychological thriller.”
For context on the character, Ro Laren is described as a Bajoran who served on the Enterprise-D under Jean-Luc Picard, defected to the Maquis, was imprisoned, returned to Starfleet, and later became head of security on Deep Space Nine—“last seen” in Picard where she meets her demise.
Developer Michał Gembicki characterized the planet as an uncharted “graveyard for ships,” with core gameplay built around investigating wreckage to uncover “the cause of the disaster” and mysteries on the surface.
