MediaTek Unveils Industry-First 2nm Smartphone Processor with Advanced AI Capabilities

MediaTek claims the Dimensity 9600 Pro improves single-core performance by 17% and multi-core performance by 15% over the Dimensity 9500, while reducing energy consumption by 37% in single-core workloads and 61% in multi-core workloads. These figures are based on MediaTek’s own testing.
The chip’s 2+3+3 CPU layout consists of two C2-Ultra cores and six C2-Pro cores, with all eight sharing a 16MB L3 cache; its L2 cache is 21% larger than that of the Dimensity 9500.
MediaTek says LPDDR6 increases effective memory bandwidth by 33% over the previous generation, while UFS 5.0 can deliver read and write speeds twice as fast as dual-channel UFS 4.x.
The company’s software strategy includes the Dimensity Agentic AI Engine, the Dimensity Sensing Foundation SDK and the Dimensity NeuroPilot SDK, intended to help manufacturers and developers build AI applications; MediaTek also says it is working with Google and other partners on agentic AI support.
MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai said the company expects to adjust prices to reflect higher supply-chain costs and allocate production according to product profitability, prioritizing higher-margin AI accelerators over lower-margin components as AI demand strains semiconductor capacity.
MediaTek unveiled the Dimensity 9600 Pro, its first smartphone chip built on TSMC's cutting-edge 2-nanometer process. The flagship processor claims major gains over its predecessor: 17% faster single-core performance, 15% faster multi-core speed, and dramatically lower power use — 37% less energy for single-core tasks and 61% less for multi-core work. WCCFtech reports the chip can run advanced AI models with up to 30 billion parameters directly on your phone.
The 9600 Pro features an all-performance eight-core CPU design with LPDDR6 memory and ultra-fast UFS 5.0 storage. MediaTek also launched the more affordable Dimensity 9600M for mid-range phones. Both chips take aim at Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors, marking a major move in the competitive smartphone chip market as AI-driven demand reshapes the semiconductor landscape.
The 9600 Pro uses a 2+3+3 CPU design: two ultra-powerful C2-Ultra cores and six C2-Pro cores all sharing a massive 16MB shared cache. MarketScreener notes the L2 cache is 21% larger than the previous Dimensity 9500. The LPDDR6 memory bandwidth jumps 33% higher than the prior generation. UFS 5.0 storage reads and writes at twice the speed of dual-channel UFS 4.x drives.
Dual neural processors (NPUs) handle on-device AI tasks with improved efficiency. The chip supports gaming frame rates up to 185 FPS and can record 4K video in slow-motion at 240 FPS. All eight cores can run heavy workloads simultaneously without throttling, a major advantage for demanding apps and games.
Unite.ai reports MediaTek is bundling three key software tools with the 9600 Pro: the Dimensity Agentic AI Engine for intelligent agents, the Dimensity Sensing Foundation SDK for camera and sensor AI, and the Dimensity NeuroPilot SDK for general machine learning. These aim to help phone makers and app developers build AI features faster.
The company is also working with Google and other partners to support agentic AI — systems that act independently to complete tasks. This move positions MediaTek as more than just a chip maker. It's building an ecosystem that makes AI features easier to deploy across Android phones.
MarketScreener reports MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai said the company will adjust prices to reflect higher supply-chain costs. With AI chip demand surging globally, semiconductor capacity is stretched thin. MediaTek plans to prioritize production of higher-margin AI accelerators over lower-margin components.
This strategy reveals an industry-wide challenge: AI boom or not, fab capacity remains finite. Phone makers will likely see price increases trickle down, though exactly how much remains unclear. First phones with the 9600 Pro arrive later this year, giving Qualcomm serious competition in the high-end smartphone market.
