NASA and Katalyst Launch $30M Mission to Rescue Sinking Swift Telescope

NASA is counting down to a June 30 launch of a robotic spacecraft designed to pull the Swift Observatory back from the edge of a fiery re-entry. The $30 million mission — built in under 10 months — is a last-ditch effort to save a $500 million gamma-ray telescope that has been slowly falling toward Earth, NBC Boston reported.
The culprit is the sun. Intense solar activity has heated and expanded Earth's upper atmosphere, creating extra drag that has dragged Swift from its original 363-mile orbit down to just 224 miles. Without a rescue, it will burn up on re-entry, according to The Boston Globe.
The rescue spacecraft is named Link. It was built by Flagstaff-based startup Katalyst Space Technologies and features three robotic arms. On June 30, it will launch aboard a Pegasus XL rocket dropped from a carrier aircraft over Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, NBC Los Angeles reported. This is expected to be the final flight of the Pegasus rocket ever.
Link will chase Swift down in orbit and attempt to grab it. The tricky part: Swift was never designed to be grabbed. It has no docking port or grapple fixture. Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee called it "the first American space robot to go up and do anything like this." If the capture works, Link will fire its thrusters and push Swift back up to a stable 373-mile orbit by September, according to NBC Chicago.
The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory launched in 2004. Since then it has spotted more than 2,000 gamma-ray bursts — violent explosions in deep space that last only seconds. No other telescope reacts as fast. S. Bradley Cenko, Swift's lead scientist at NASA Goddard, called it "NASA's multitool," saying it "rapidly points at short-lived outbursts" that other telescopes simply miss, NBC Miami reported.
There is no planned replacement for Swift's specific job. If it burns up, that detection capability disappears entirely. The scientific community is watching closely, with astronomers noting that Hubble takes days to rotate toward a target while Swift takes just minutes.
NASA put out an emergency call to private companies on August 11, 2025, asking if anyone could save the telescope. Katalyst submitted a winning bid. By September 2025, NASA handed the startup a $30 million contract. NASA Astrophysics Division Director Shawn Domagal-Goldman said the proposal was "technically and programmatically plausible" and NASA simply said, "Yeah, let's do it," according to NBC Washington.
The entire spacecraft — designed, built, and tested — was ready in under 10 months. Link underwent thermal vacuum testing at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in April and arrived at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in June. NASA and Penn State also made Swift more aerodynamic to slow its orbital decay and buy Link more time, NBC Philadelphia reported.
Industry analysts warn the mission is a long shot. Swift is an "unprepared" satellite — it was never built to be serviced. Docking with a slowly tumbling, uncooperative object using robotic arms has never been done by a U.S. spacecraft. The critical point of no return is 185 miles. Below that, the atmosphere is too thick and rescue becomes impossible, NBC San Diego reported.
But the stakes go beyond Swift. CEO Ghonhee Lee says a successful rescue is a stepping stone to saving the Hubble Space Telescope, which is also losing altitude due to solar drag. A Hubble mission would need a bigger, next-generation version of Link. If Swift is saved, it opens a new commercial market: companies that extend the life of aging satellites rather than replacing them entirely, according to NBC Bay Area.
