NASA funds $600M for robotic lunar landers, eyes moon base, as Swift rescue delays.

A rescue mission to save NASA's Swift Observatory has been delayed after a last-minute software problem halted the rocket on the launch pad, according to WISN and KETV. The Swift telescope is expected to fall out of orbit and crash back to Earth by October if it is not saved in time.

Separate from the Swift mission, NASA has awarded nearly $600 million in new contracts to build robotic landers on the moon. The goal is to pave the way for a permanent base near the lunar South Pole, according to KOAT and KCCI.
These robots will do work before astronauts arrive. They will collect data on lunar dust and measure radiation levels. They will also set up permanent navigation markers — like GPS beacons — so future astronauts can find their way around the moon's surface.
NASA also revealed plans for a nuclear-powered rover as part of the lunar exploration effort. The rover is built to handle the extreme cold near the South Pole, where temperatures can drop far below freezing and sunlight is scarce, according to WCVB and WMUR.
A nuclear power source allows the rover to keep running even without sunlight. Solar panels would not work well in the permanently shadowed craters near the South Pole. The rover is designed to explore those dark, cold regions where water ice is believed to exist.
NASA's broader plan is to use all of these tools — the robotic landers, the rovers, and the navigation markers — to build up a base near the lunar South Pole. The South Pole is seen as the best spot because of its water ice, which could be used for drinking water and rocket fuel, according to WAPT and KOCO.
The $600 million in contracts is just the start. NASA wants robots to do the hard groundwork now so that astronauts can live and work on the moon for long stretches in the future. The agency sees the South Pole base as a stepping stone to eventually sending humans to Mars.
