Z.ai Releases GLM-5.3 Open-Weight Model, Intensifying Competition with OpenAI and Anthropic

GLM-5.3's benchmark results show substantial improvement over GLM-5.2 and, in some tests, nearing or even edging out Anthropic's Fable 5.
In India, GLM-5.2 is available to users via web chatbot and APIs with support for more than 20 coding tools, with paid subscriptions starting around Rs 1,410 per month—cheaper than ChatGPT Plus (Rs 1,740) and Claude Pro in local pricing.
Independent evaluations assign GLM-5.2 and DeepSeek's top model an intelligence score of 53, with Kimi K3 and Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 ahead in the rankings, highlighting a competitive gap that is closing but not yet surpassed.
Industry pricing dynamics show DeepSeek raising prices for its V4 Flash and Pro models by up to fourfold; however, the blended price for V4 Pro remains below GLM-5.2, underscoring ongoing price- performance considerations shaping enterprise AI buying choices.
Z.ai is described as one of China’s AI pioneers and the world’s first large language model maker to go public, underscoring its regulatory and market visibility in the AI race.
Chinese AI startup Z.ai has released GLM-5.3, claiming it is the strongest open-weights coding model available today. The Decoder reported the model is already live, with the company saying it found 1,097 critical and high-severity bugs in real deployed software during testing.
Z.ai, also known as Zhipu, is pushing hard to close the gap on Anthropic and OpenAI in the coding AI race. Bloomberg Law reported the company plans to release the model's weights — meaning developers can download and run it themselves — within two weeks of launch, under a permissive open license.
GLM-5.3 is built on the same 700-billion-parameter base as its predecessor, GLM-5.2. According to The Decoder, all performance gains come from extended post-training — not a bigger model. That is a meaningful technical choice: it shows Z.ai is squeezing more out of existing infrastructure rather than simply scaling up.
Benchmark results show GLM-5.3 nearing or edging out Anthropic's Claude 4 (called Fable 5 in leaderboard rankings) on some coding tests. Independent evaluations give GLM-5.2 and DeepSeek's top model an intelligence score of 53, while Kimi K3, Claude Fable 5, and GPT-5.6 still rank higher. The gap is closing, but Z.ai has not yet overtaken the US leaders overall.
One of GLM-5.3's headline claims is practical, not just theoretical. TechTimes reported that post-training produced exploit chains Z.ai never explicitly programmed. The model found 1,097 critical and high-severity vulnerabilities in software that is actually running in the real world.
That kind of real-world security performance is a strong pitch for enterprise buyers. Companies spend heavily to find bugs before attackers do. If GLM-5.3 can surface critical flaws at scale, it gives Z.ai a concrete selling point beyond benchmark scores.
Z.ai is competing hard on price. In India, GLM-5.2 is available via web and API with support for more than 20 coding tools. Paid access starts at around Rs 1,410 per month — cheaper than ChatGPT Plus at Rs 1,740 and Claude Pro's local pricing. Head Topics noted this pricing push is part of a broader Chinese AI strategy to win enterprise customers on cost.
The pricing landscape is shifting fast. DeepSeek recently raised prices for its V4 Flash and Pro models by up to fourfold. Even so, Bloomberg Law noted DeepSeek's blended V4 Pro price still sits below GLM-5.2. For enterprise buyers, price-performance, latency, and practical fit are now driving decisions more than brand name alone.
Z.ai holds a unique place in the AI industry. Bloomberg Law described it as one of China's AI pioneers and the world's first large language model company to go public. That gives it both regulatory visibility and market credibility as the US-China AI competition intensifies.
The open-weight strategy — releasing model files freely to developers — is becoming a key battleground. Chinese firms including Z.ai, DeepSeek, and Kimi are betting that openness, low cost, and strong coding performance will win developers away from closed US models. GLM-5.3's release puts Z.ai at the center of that bet.
