Instagram's New Muse Image AI Utilizes Public Content; Users Automatically Opted In

Instagram has launched a new AI image-generation tool called Muse Image — and if your account is public, your photos may already be part of it. According to Lex18, all users with public profiles have been automatically opted into the program, with no action required on their part.
The tool can update, remix, and generate new images based on user prompts. WCPO reports that if someone uses your content to generate an AI image, you will receive a notification inside the app.
Muse Image is Instagram's new AI model built for creating personalized images. It draws on public content — photos, videos, and posts — from public Instagram profiles. The model can take a user's prompt and generate or remix images based on that content, according to KGUN9.
The tool is designed to make AI-generated content feel personal and tailored. Because it pulls from real public posts, the images it creates can reflect styles, faces, or themes found on actual user profiles, TurnTo23 reported.
Instagram did not ask users for permission before enrolling them. Every public account was automatically included in the Muse Image program, according to KOAA. Users who do not want their content used must actively choose to opt out.
To opt out, users can go to their account settings and look for the AI training options. Switching your account to private is another way to keep your content out of the program, KTNV noted.
Instagram says it will alert users when their content is pulled into an AI generation. If someone uses Muse Image and your photo or post is part of the result, you will get a notification directly in the app, according to WCPO.
This notification system is meant to give users some visibility into how their content is being used. However, the notification comes after the fact — your content is used first, and you are told about it second, Lex18 reported.
The automatic opt-in model has drawn attention because most users may not know it happened. Many people make their Instagram accounts public to grow an audience — not to feed an AI model. The line between sharing content and consenting to AI training is now blurry, KGUN9 reported.
This move follows a wider trend of major tech platforms using existing user content to train AI tools. Experts warn that users should regularly check their privacy settings on all social platforms, not just Instagram, to stay in control of their own content, according to TurnTo23.
