Saharan Dust, Wind Shear, and MJO Quiet the Atlantic Hurricane Season

The Atlantic hurricane basin has gone quiet. A 0% chance of tropical development over the next seven days has been confirmed by National Hurricane Center, as a powerful wave of Saharan dust, hostile wind shear, and a migrating weather pulse combine to shut down storm formation through at least the July 4 holiday.
The lull brings some relief to Florida's coastline. But meteorologists warn it is temporary. Record-warm ocean temperatures remain locked beneath the surface, ready to fuel storms once the atmosphere calms down later in the summer.
A massive plume of dry, dusty air from the Sahara Desert reached the Florida Peninsula around June 20. National Weather Service Miami warned of rain chances near "nil" through the week. High temperatures in Miami-Dade and Broward counties are forecast to hit 92°F to 95°F, with heat index values climbing to 105°F to 110°F.
The dust does more than stop rain. It traps heat at the surface. Miami Chief Meteorologist Luke Dorris of WPLG Local 10 warned: "The dust doesn't just stop storms; it traps heat. We are looking at 'feels-like' temperatures well into the triple digits with almost no afternoon rain to cool us down." The Saharan Air Layer typically rides at around 20,000 feet above the Atlantic.
The Saharan Air Layer suppresses storms in three ways, according to NASA Earth Observatory. First, it brings extremely dry air that saps moisture from developing storms. Second, it carries a high-speed mid-level wind jet that tears apart storm tops. Third, its warm air sits above cooler air, creating a "cap" that stops the rising motion storms need to grow.
Wind shear across the Caribbean has increased by 10 to 15 knots due to the Madden-Julian Oscillation, or MJO, according to NOAA Climate Prediction Center. The MJO is a globe-circling pulse of clouds and rain. It completed its transit of the Atlantic around June 18 and moved into the Western Pacific, leaving the Atlantic in a "suppressed phase." Dr. Jeff Masters of Yale Climate Connections called the MJO shift "the final nail in the coffin" for June activity.
The quiet surface masks a dangerous buildup below. North Atlantic sea surface temperatures are running 1.5°C above the 1991–2020 average — a record high for late June, according to the University of Maine Climate Reanalyzer. No active storms means no churning of the ocean, so cooler deep water stays buried. Surface temperatures keep climbing.
Phil Klotzbach, senior research scientist at Colorado State University, said the "accumulated cyclone energy potential remains coiled like a spring." NHC Director Dr. Michael Brennan put it plainly: "We are seeing a classic battle between record ocean heat and an incredibly hostile atmosphere. For now, the atmosphere is winning, which is good news for the short term." Analysts at Swiss Re warned that 2022 showed exactly this pattern — a quiet July followed by catastrophic Hurricane Ian in September.
The Saharan dust is a serious health hazard, not just a weather curiosity. The American Lung Association has issued warnings for Florida and Gulf Coast residents with asthma or COPD. Air quality is expected to reach "unhealthy for sensitive groups" levels, according to EPA AirNow. High temperatures are also pushing the Florida Power & Light grid toward capacity as air conditioning demand spikes.
Emergency managers are sounding a different kind of alarm. Kevin Guthrie, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, warned that a quiet June is "the worst thing that can happen for our messaging — people think the season is over before it's even begun." Long-range models suggest the dust plume will stay dense through the July 4 holiday, but the peak of hurricane season still lies ahead in August and September.
