High Temperatures, Wind Shear, and Dust Prevent US Hurricanes Until Mid-July

Florida and the rest of the U.S. East Coast are getting a rare tropical break this July 4th holiday. No tropical storm or hurricane is expected to threaten the country through mid-July, according to TC Palm. Three powerful forces — scorching heat, strong wind shear, and a massive wave of Saharan dust — are working together to shut down storm formation across the Atlantic.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) confirmed on July 2 that "tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 7 days" for the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. The one system forecasters were watching — a low-pressure area east of Florida — has already fallen apart. But residents should still expect a soggy Independence Day, as a stalled front is forecast to bring scattered rain across Florida and the Southeast.
The Atlantic is being hit by what forecasters call a "triple threat" of suppression. First, a massive Saharan Air Layer (SAL) — a wall of dry, dust-filled air blowing off Africa's Sahara Desert — arrived in the Atlantic Basin on June 21, according to Herald Tribune. This dust acts like a lid on the atmosphere, blocking the rising warm air that storms need to form and grow.
Second, El Niño is pumping strong westerly winds high in the atmosphere over the Atlantic. These winds create "wind shear" — think of it as a pair of scissors that cuts developing storms apart before they can organize. Third, extreme heat is baking the eastern U.S., with heat index values forecast between 103 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit through the holiday weekend, according to Naples News. Ironically, that same heat is helping to stabilize the atmosphere and prevent tropical spin-up.
In late June, forecasters were tracking a low-pressure system near Florida with a "low" chance of development, according to Ocala.com. Things got briefly tense when AI-based forecast models from Google DeepMind suggested the system could grow into a tropical threat. Traditional models — the GFS and the European — disagreed and said dry air would win. They were right.
By June 30, the NHC officially removed the feature from its Tropical Weather Outlook. The Saharan dust and wind shear choked off any chance of organization. The 2026 Atlantic season has now produced just one named storm — Tropical Storm Arthur, which formed on June 17 and caused an estimated $100 million in damage and four deaths before dissipating, according to Gainesville Sun.
"No hurricane" does not mean "no rain." Meteorologists are calling the Fourth of July a potential "sloppy holiday rainmaker" for Florida and the Southeast. A stalled frontal boundary — not a tropical system — will push moisture across the region. Residents are urged to plan for localized flooding even without a named storm, according to Tallahassee Democrat.
Widespread Heat Warnings and Extreme Heat Advisories are also in effect for the eastern half of the country through Saturday. Health officials have issued warnings for sensitive groups — especially people with asthma — as dust and heat combine to cut air quality. The bottom line: pack sunscreen, a rain jacket, and an inhaler this holiday weekend.
Colorado State University (CSU) has already revised its 2026 seasonal forecast down twice — from 13 named storms in April to just 11 named storms, 5 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes as of June, according to St. Augustine Record. El Niño is the "dominant factor," says CSU's Dr. Philip Klotzbach, driving the shear that rips storms apart. The season's Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) sits at just 0.4 — compared to a full-season average of 123.
Still, forecasters are cautioning people not to relax too much. "It only takes one" storm to define a season, they warn — pointing to Arthur's June damage as proof. July is historically a slow month for Florida hurricane landfalls, happening roughly once every seven years. The real danger window opens in September, according to The Ledger.
