A massive explosion tore through Blue Origin's Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral on June 12, destroying the lightning tower and a $150 million transporter-erector during a routine hotfire test of the New Glenn rocket. There were no injuries, but the blast left one of the most expensive launch pads in commercial spaceflight in ruins. Spaceflight Now reported that both the primary lightning mast and the transporter-erector are a total loss.
Now, CEO Dave Limp says Blue Origin is rebuilding — and rethinking how it launches rockets entirely. The company is aiming to return New Glenn to flight before the end of 2026, with a new crane-based system replacing the destroyed pad equipment. The stakes are high: New Glenn is NASA's designated heavy-lifter for the Artemis moon program under President Trump.
The explosion happened at 10:16 AM EDT, just two minutes into a long-duration static fire test. Limp said early analysis points to the aft section of the first stage — the engine compartment housing seven BE-4 engines producing 3.85 million pounds of thrust. A secondary blast followed as the first stage collapsed. Investigators are now combing through extensive camera and sensor data to find the root cause.
The same BE-4 engines power United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket, which carries sensitive national security satellites. The Verge noted that any systemic flaw found in the aft section could ripple outward, affecting Vulcan launch schedules and Pentagon payloads. Under the Commercial Spaceflight Safety Act of 2025, Blue Origin must deliver a full root-cause report to the FAA before it can fly again from LC-36.
The damage was severe but not total. The lightning tower and the transporter-erector — the massive structure that rolls rockets to the pad — are gone. But Blue Origin confirmed that the tank farm, which stores propellants, and the rocket integration facility both survived. In fact, 92% of tank farm sensors remained operational after the blast, Blue Origin said in a technical bulletin.
Space Force Brig. Gen. Kristen Thompson confirmed that nearby facilities suffered only "incidental damage" within expected blast zones. Blue Origin invested over $1 billion redeveloping LC-36, a historic site once used for Atlas-Centaur launches. Losing the transporter-erector alone wipes out a $150 million piece of infrastructure, according to industry estimates.
Rather than rebuild the traditional transporter-erector, Blue Origin is switching to a crane-based horizontal-vertical hybrid launch process. The rocket will be assembled horizontally, then lifted upright by a permanent heavy-lift crane at the pad. Blue Origin filed expedited construction permits for the crane assembly on June 29. Limp said the new approach should offer "greater launch flexibility and a faster cadence" once flights resume.
Industry analyst Caleb Henry of BryceTech called the move "a major strategic pivot," saying the old transporter-erector was a bottleneck. If the crane system works as planned, Blue Origin claims it could support up to 12 launches per year — roughly double its previous estimate of 4 to 6. Kansas.com reported that Blue Origin released video renderings of the redesigned complex alongside the announcement.
New Glenn is the only rocket designated to launch the Blue Moon crew-capable lunar lander for NASA's Artemis program. Blue Origin holds a $3.4 billion NASA contract for the Artemis V lander. The explosion likely pushes an uncrewed Blue Moon landing demonstration into early 2027, potentially colliding with the Artemis IV mission timeline. Some members of the House Science Committee have called for an audit of Artemis commercial lander contracts over "single-source" reliance on New Glenn, according to SpaceNews.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson stressed that "space is hard, and testing is where we want these failures to happen." The White House issued its own statement, calling success "the mandate" for commercial partners. Blue Origin says recovery is already underway, with Brevard County construction crews expected to begin major pad work immediately — bringing a short-term economic boost to the Titusville area even as launch delays mount.
