Electra Invests $850 Million in Ohio Plant for EL9 Aircraft Production, Creating 2,000 Jobs

The production capacity is structured in two phases: the first phase builds up to 400 EL9 aircraft per year, with a second phase doubling capacity to 800 per year.

The EL9 uses a hybrid-electric powertrain with a Safran TG600 turbogenerator and Evolito electric motors, delivering a cruise speed of about 175 knots and a maximum ferry range of up to 1,100 nautical miles (330 nm with nine passengers).
Electra’s Ohio facility will span roughly one million square feet and will include both manufacturing operations and corporate headquarters space, reflecting a dual role in production and company leadership.
Aerospace company Electra plans to build an $850 million aircraft factory in Springfield, Ohio, making it the first production site for its EL9 Ultra Short plane, according to WLWT and Electrek. The facility will sit on a 96-acre site at AirPark Ohio and create nearly 2,000 jobs in Clark County.
The EL9 is a nine-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft that can lift off in as little as 150 feet. Electra plans to eventually build up to 800 planes per year at the Springfield site, Intelligence360 reported.
Construction on the roughly one-million-square-foot facility is set to start next year. The build comes in two phases. Phase one will produce up to 400 EL9 aircraft per year. Phase two doubles that to 800 per year, Newark Advocate reported. The site will also serve as Electra's corporate headquarters.
Electra chose Springfield for its deep aerospace ties. The city sits close to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Air Force Research Laboratory. The area also hosts the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence and SkyVision, a testing network for flights beyond the pilot's line of sight, according to Intelligence360.
The EL9 is not a typical air taxi. It is a fixed-wing plane, not a drone-style eVTOL. It uses eight electric propellers along the wing's leading edge. Those propellers blow air over large flaps, a method called blown lift. That trick cuts the takeoff distance to about 150 feet, Electrek explained.
In flight, a Safran TG600 turbine generator keeps the batteries charged. Evolito electric motors drive the propellers. The result is a cruise speed of about 175 knots and a maximum ferry range of 1,100 nautical miles. With all nine seats full, range drops to 330 nautical miles.
The EL9 has not yet flown. Electra targets a first flight in late 2027 or early 2028. The company has already submitted the aircraft for FAA Part 23 type certification. The FAA recently closed its G-1 Issue Paper, a key step that sets a formal path for certifying a new aircraft type, according to Yahoo News.
That certification milestone matters because it tells investors and customers the government has accepted the EL9's safety framework. Without it, no commercial deliveries can begin. Electra's $850 million bet hinges on clearing that regulatory bar before the factory opens at full capacity.
Springfield is pitching itself as a national hub for advanced air travel. State and local officials backed the AirPark Ohio site with public support to lock in the deal, Newark Advocate reported. The project brings nearly 2,000 direct jobs to Clark County, a region still rebuilding its manufacturing base.
Electra's move is part of a broader wave of eSTOL and hybrid-electric aviation investment in the Midwest. Ohio's access to military test ranges, research labs, and aviation infrastructure made Springfield a strong fit, the company said. The state is positioning itself to lead the next chapter of American aerospace.
