Bausch + Lomb Launches Orphia, an AI Platform Empowering Eye Doctors for Patient Focus

Bausch + Lomb has launched Orphia™, a new AI-powered digital health platform aimed at cutting the administrative load that keeps eye doctors away from their patients. The platform is brand agnostic, meaning any eye care provider can use it regardless of what products or devices they already rely on, according to Brantford Expositor.
The first feature available on Orphia is pre-surgery education for cataract patients. Bausch + Lomb says it plans to expand the platform over time to cover the full patient journey, from care coordination to day-to-day practice workflow, Stratford Beacon Herald reported.
Bausch + Lomb has partnered with Hippocratic AI to build the voice layer behind Orphia. Hippocratic AI specializes in voice agents for healthcare and has built a custom large language model trained on over 200 million real patient interactions, according to Chatham Daily News.
The company already has a track record of deployment across major health systems. Its technology is designed to handle routine patient communication so physicians can spend more time on direct care rather than administrative tasks, Sault Star reported.
The core problem Orphia aims to solve is operational burden. Paperwork, patient prep calls, and scheduling tasks eat into the time doctors have for actual care. Bausch + Lomb designed Orphia to absorb those tasks through AI automation, according to Brantford Expositor.
By starting with pre-surgery cataract education, the platform focuses on one of the highest-volume procedures in eye care. Cataract surgery is one of the most common elective surgeries performed globally, making it a practical entry point for AI-assisted patient prep, Stratford Beacon Herald noted.
Bausch + Lomb created a new internal unit called Digital Health Services to house and grow the Orphia platform. The division signals that the company sees digital tools as a long-term growth area separate from its traditional eye care product lines, according to Chatham Daily News.
Bausch + Lomb trades on both the NYSE and the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker BLCO. The company has not disclosed a price point for Orphia or a timeline for when additional AI features will go live, Sault Star reported.
Bausch + Lomb has outlined a roadmap that goes well beyond cataract prep. Future capabilities are expected to include care coordination tools and broader practice workflow support, according to Brantford Expositor. The company has not named a specific launch date for these additions.
The brand-agnostic design is a key strategic choice. It means Orphia can grow its user base across the entire eye care market, not just among doctors who already use Bausch + Lomb products. That broad reach could make the platform a significant data and service asset over time, Chatham Daily News reported.
