Coeur Mining Announces Record $158 Million Exploration Plan for Mexican Operations

Coeur Mining (NYSE, TSX: CDE) is making its biggest exploration bet ever. The company plans to spend $158 million on exploration in 2026 — double what it spent the year before — according to National Post. The focus is its two gold-silver mines in Mexico: Palmarejo and Las Chispas.
The record investment builds on five years of heavy spending. Coeur has put roughly $340 million into exploration since 2021, according to Calgary Sun. The company says that push has extended mine life and grown its reserves and resources across its portfolio.
At Palmarejo, Coeur is targeting two main areas. The first is the Eastern District, where resource growth is the top priority. Drilling at San Miguel and La Unión continues to return wide, high-grade intercepts, according to Leader-Post. Those results are also pushing the boundaries of both deposits outward.
The second focus is the Main Mine Trend. Coeur is building resources along this corridor to support the mine's longer-term future. Together, the two areas form the core of Palmarejo's growth strategy for the year ahead.
Las Chispas has a different set of priorities for 2026. Coeur's main goal is to expand on new discoveries made in 2025, according to Sault Star. The company wants to turn those early finds into near-term resource growth as quickly as possible.
At the same time, Coeur plans to keep up what it calls "scout drilling" — early-stage drilling designed to find brand-new targets. The goal is to keep refilling what the company calls its "inferred pipeline," which is the pool of lower-confidence resources that can eventually become proven reserves, according to Montreal Gazette.
Coeur's exploration push is not new. The company has invested about $340 million since 2021 across its portfolio, according to Whitecourt Star. That sustained spending has driven meaningful gains in mine life, reserves, and resources — the key metrics that determine how long a mine can keep producing.
The 2026 program at $158 million is more than twice the size of last year's budget. That signals strong confidence from Coeur's leadership that its Mexican assets still have significant untapped potential underground.
Palmarejo and Las Chispas are both gold-silver operations in Mexico. They sit at the heart of Coeur's production portfolio. By doubling exploration spending there, the company is signaling that it sees these mines as its best opportunity for long-term growth, according to Stratford Beacon Herald.
High-grade silver and gold deposits in Mexico have attracted major investment from global miners in recent years. Coeur's record 2026 budget puts it among the most aggressive explorers in the region. Results from this year's drilling campaigns will be closely watched by investors tracking the company's reserve replacement progress, according to Cold Lake Sun.
