Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has given nearly 100,000 state employees a five-day holiday weekend to mark America's 250th birthday. Governor DeSantis announced on June 12 that all state offices under the State Personnel System would close on July 2 and July 6, according to News4JAX. That adds two extra days to the standard three-day weekend most Americans get from the Friday federal holiday. The result is the longest state-employee holiday in recent Florida history.

Legislature Gave Staff Extra Days Off First
DeSantis was not the first to act. The five-day break will push travel numbers to record levels. AAA projects 4.62 million Floridians will travel during this period, with 4.08 million of them driving. That means major congestion on I-75 and I-95, according to Naples News.
Hotels, theme parks, and coastal rentals stand to benefit from the surge. Essential state workers — including Florida Highway Patrol and Department of Corrections staff — will remain on duty. Those employees typically receive compensatory leave or special holiday pay, according to Palm Beach Post.

With roughly 100,000 employees off for two extra days, the state is effectively paying for 1.6 million hours of unperformed work, according to an analysis of State Personnel System data. The next long holiday weekend for Florida state employees will be Labor Day on Monday, September 7, 2026. DeSantis has granted extra days around both Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July in 2024 and 2025 as well.
