Russia Proposes Reclaiming Military Payouts From Soldiers Convicted of Domestic Crimes

Russia's defence ministry is planning to reclaim part of a one-off payout from contract service personnel found guilty of criminal offences at home, according to a draft law. This comes amid increasing cases of domestic violence among soldiers in Russia's war on Ukraine. The minimum one-year payment is 400,000 roubles ($4,640) for soldiers signing a one year contract to fight in the war, which Moscow calls "a special military operation". In practice, one-offs may reach a few million roubles per soldier, depending on the region, in addition to a monthly salary. Russia is reducing sentences for those serving time in prison in exchange for signing up for the war as it aims to bolster army numbers.
