Saputo Sells Iconic UK Dairy Brands to Lactalis for £988 Million

Canadian dairy giant Saputo Inc. has agreed to sell its entire United Kingdom dairy business to French group Lactalis for an enterprise value of approximately £988 million, according to Financial Post. The deal hands over five manufacturing facilities and some of Britain's best-known dairy brands, including Cathedral City, Clover, Country Life, Davidstow, and Wensleydale.
Saputo, which trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol SAP, said the sale is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of calendar 2027, subject to standard closing conditions, Montreal Gazette reported. The company said the proceeds will boost its financial flexibility and help fund future growth.
The buyer, B.S.A. SAS, is part of Lactalis — the French family-owned company that is one of the largest dairy businesses in the world. Under the deal, Lactalis will take ownership of all five of Saputo's UK manufacturing sites, according to Edmonton Sun. The transaction also transfers a portfolio of household British dairy brands that have been on supermarket shelves for decades.
Cathedral City is the UK's best-selling cheddar brand. Country Life and Clover are leading butter and dairy spread names. Davidstow is a premium Cornish cheddar, and Wensleydale is a well-known Yorkshire cheese. Together, these brands give Lactalis a powerful foothold in the British retail dairy market, Leader Post reported.
The sale marks a significant retreat for Saputo from the UK market. The Montreal-based company built its British presence through a series of acquisitions over the years. Now it is choosing to exit and redeploy that capital elsewhere, according to Sudbury Star.
Saputo said the roughly £988 million in proceeds will give it more room to accelerate growth in its core markets. The company has dairy operations across Canada, the United States, Australia, and Argentina. Exiting the UK lets it concentrate resources on those segments, Sault Star reported.
The two companies expect the transaction to close by the end of the first quarter of 2027. That gives regulators in the UK and elsewhere time to review the deal. Antitrust scrutiny is common in large food and dairy mergers, Brantford Expositor noted.
Both sides must meet standard closing conditions before the sale is final. No major obstacles have been publicly flagged. Lactalis already operates in the UK, so the integration of Saputo's brands and factories would extend an existing presence rather than build one from scratch, according to Chatham Daily News.
Lactalis is one of the world's biggest dairy companies, with brands sold in over 100 countries. Adding Saputo's UK portfolio significantly strengthens its British retail position. The deal gives it direct control over some of the most recognized names in UK grocery aisles, Cochrane Times Post reported.
For the UK dairy industry, the ownership change means one of the sector's largest operations will shift from Canadian to French hands. Workers at the five facilities were not directly mentioned in the announcement. Industry watchers will monitor whether Lactalis makes changes to operations after the deal closes in early 2027, according to Pincher Creek Echo.
