Greenland Resources Receives $7 Million Non-Repayable Contribution from Canadian Government

Canada has handed Greenland Resources Inc. a $7 million non-repayable grant to advance one of the Arctic's most strategically important mining projects. The funding, delivered through Natural Resources Canada's Critical Minerals program, makes Canada the first G7 government to invest directly in Greenlandic mining, according to Financial Post.
The money targets the Malmbjerg molybdenum deposit in East Greenland — a project sitting on 245 million tonnes of ore containing 571 million pounds of molybdenum metal. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson said: "Canada has the minerals the world wants, and we are acting with speed, scale, and purpose to get them from deposit to market."
China controls roughly 89% of global magnesium supply and 45% of molybdenum production, according to Financial Post. When Beijing restricted molybdenum exports in early 2025, Western governments scrambled for alternatives. Malmbjerg offers a rare solution: a pure molybdenum deposit with no radioactive by-products — the kind of clean profile that blocked rivals like Greenland's Kvanefjeld uranium project simply cannot match.
The European Commission named Malmbjerg a Priority Project under its RESourceEU Action Plan in December 2025. Once running, the mine could supply 100% of the EU's defense-related molybdenum needs, according to Montreal Gazette. Executive Chairman Dr. Ruben Shiffman called the Canadian grant a step toward securing "long-term supply of critical minerals for Canada and the EU with high sustainability standards."
The grant specifically funds a metallurgical testing program running until March 2028. Scientists will test whether molybdenum can be processed using saline water instead of fresh water — a key innovation for a remote Arctic site where freshwater is scarce. They will also try to recover magnesium and rare earth elements as by-products from the ore and from 35,000 cubic meters of saline water processed daily, according to Financial Post.
The Malmbjerg project uses an open-pit design built for minimal environmental impact. Infrastructure is modular, water use is low, and aquatic disturbance is kept small. A 2022 feasibility study by Tetra Tech put the project's after-tax internal rate of return at 22.4% and its net present value at US$1.17 billion, assuming a molybdenum price of $18 per pound.
The final approval came after a fast-moving series of milestones. In June 2025, Greenland's government granted the company a 30-year exploitation license for molybdenum and magnesium. In April 2026, Finnish steel giant SSAB signed an eight-year off-take agreement to buy Malmbjerg's output, according to Montreal Gazette. Canada gave conditional approval at the PDAC mining convention in March 2026 before the final sign-off this week.
A preconstruction field program involving 25 professionals from Greenland, Canada, and Austria began on June 15, 2026. Canada's largest Inuit-owned construction firm, the Nuna Group of Companies, is contracted to build the mine and train local Greenlandic Inuit workers. The project is projected to create 250 to 500 jobs in East Greenland and boost the island's GDP by more than 25% over its 20-year life.
Analysts at S&P Global warn that East Greenland's extreme climate is the "ultimate arbiter of success." Several other high-profile Greenlandic mining projects have faced full write-offs in recent years. On the market side, StockInvest.us recently labeled Greenland Resources stock (TSX: MOLY) a "Sell Candidate" due to short-term volatility, even as some analysts set a one-year price target of CAD $2.17 — roughly 33% above June 2026 trading levels.
Local Greenlandic communities have raised concerns too. While the project's Social Impact Assessment was approved with high positive ratings, some Inuit residents remain wary that fast-paced industrial development could erode traditional hunting cultures, according to Montreal Gazette. The saline-water flotation process — central to the metallurgical program — is also untested at commercial scale and will need to prove itself before construction can begin in earnest.
