Pelago Bioscience has acquired RG Discovery, creating a single drug discovery partner that handles both chemistry and biology under one roof. The deal unites Pelago's CETSA® technology — a method for measuring how drugs bind to targets inside living cells — with RG Discovery's medicinal chemistry and custom compound synthesis, according to Financial Post.
The combined company aims to cut the time it takes drug teams to move from finding a promising molecule to refining it for clinical use. Instead of passing work between separate biology and chemistry firms, clients now get one partner that designs, builds, and tests compounds in a continuous loop, Financial Post reported.
CETSA® stands for Cellular Thermal Shift Assay. In plain terms, it measures whether a drug is actually grabbing its target protein inside a real, living cell — not just in a test tube. This matters because many drug candidates look promising in lab dishes but fail when tested in living systems. Pelago built its entire business around this technology, which has been cited in over 400 peer-reviewed studies.
By pairing that biological readout with RG Discovery's team of PhD-level chemists, Pelago can now close what CEO Michael Dabrowski calls a critical gap. "By bringing RG Discovery into the Pelago family, we are closing the loop between designing a molecule and seeing how it actually behaves in a living cell," Dabrowski said. "Chemistry and biology happen simultaneously."
Traditional drug discovery worked like a relay race. A biology firm would find a target, hand it to a chemistry firm to build molecules, then wait for results before repeating the cycle. The merger brings Pelago's total headcount to over 120 employees spread across Sweden, Germany, and the United States.
