Clifford Swan Rebalances Portfolio, Trimming Stakes in Key Large-Cap U.S. Companies

Clifford Swan Investment Counsel LLC trimmed stakes across several major U.S. companies in its latest SEC disclosures, reducing its holdings in ExxonMobil, Nike, Emerson Electric, Starbucks, and Johnson Controls International during the fourth quarter by amounts ranging from about 1.9% to 6.5%. Despite the reductions, the filings show sizable positions remaining in each name, with institutional investors controlling the vast majority of shares for these companies. In each case, other hedge funds and institutional investors were also actively adjusting exposure—boosting positions in ExxonMobil, NIKE, and Emerson Electric, while adding new or expanding stakes in Starbucks and Johnson Controls. The updates reflect a broad, portfolio-level rebalancing rather than a shift limited to a single sector or company. Overall, the reports underscore ongoing institutional rotation in large-cap equities as Clifford Swan reduces risk in select positions while others continue to accumulate.
In ExxonMobil, Clifford Swan reported owning 295,389 shares after selling 6,505 in the quarter; the stake was valued at about $35.547 million and was its 20th largest holding, while institutional investors owned 61.80% of the stock. TD Asset Management also increased its position to 4,786,807 shares (valued at about $576.0 million) after buying 98,683 shares.
For NIKE, the filing coverage noted that Director John W. Rogers, Jr. bought 4,000 shares in a transaction dated Thursday, April 9. The article also stated that hedge funds and other institutional investors own 64.25% of NIKE’s stock.
In Emerson Electric, CEO Surendralal Lanca Karsanbhai sold 5,700 shares at an average price of $142.32, for proceeds totaling $811,224. The same reporting also highlighted that Brighton Jones LLC increased its Emerson position by 74.1% to 11,392 shares.
Starbucks also had company/market context beyond the stake trimming: the article said Starbucks declared a quarterly dividend of $0.62 per share, with stockholders of record on Friday, May 15 and payment on Friday, May 29. It cited an annualized dividend of $2.48 (about a 2.6% yield) and a payout ratio of 187.88%. It also stated institutional ownership at 72.29%.
For Johnson Controls International, Clifford Swan reported holding 288,770 shares after selling 8,649 in the quarter; the stake was valued at about $34.58 million. The reporting stated institutional investors and hedge funds owned 90.05% of JCI’s stock, underscoring how concentrated ownership is among institutions even as some funds trimmed.
