Wildfire smoke from Canada and industrial activity in Mexico spreads haze across North America.

Satellite imagery shows light-density smoke plumes from wildfires in south-central Northwest Territories and northern Alberta drifting east through Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In the southeastern United States, scattered fires generated small, light-density smoke plumes across the Carolinas that generally drifted southward. Across Mexico and the surrounding Pacific and Gulf of America, emissions from active fires, gas flaring and other industrial sources, and remnant smoke combined into a widespread layer of light-density smoke and aerosols. The haze extended southwest over the Pacific Ocean and north across the western Gulf of America, eventually reaching southern Texas. A larger area of moderate-density smoke was also observed in the southern Gulf of America, moving southward across Mexico and into the Pacific, with additional moderate smoke along the Pacific coast of southern Mexico.
For Mexico and surrounding waters, the satellite interpretation attributes the haze not only to active fires and industrial activity, but specifically to “aerosol emissions from gas flaring and other industrial activities,” plus “remnant smoke from previous days.”
The same satellite narrative narrows the extent of the widespread light-density smoke/aerosol layer to “south and central Mexico” (rather than all of Mexico uniformly).
In the Canadian Arctic outflow, the wildfires are described as generating “light density smoke plumes drifting eastward through Saskatchewan and Manitoba” (i.e., the observation emphasizes the eastward drift corridor via both provinces).
