Toys for Bob Unveils 'Spyro: A Realm Beyond' with True Dragon Flight for 2027 Release

Toys for Bob announced Spyro: A Realm Beyond at the Xbox Games Showcase, setting up the first fully original Spyro adventure in nearly two decades and positioning it as a fresh entry for longtime fans and newcomers. The game stars Spyro as he becomes stranded in a strange new realm and must team up with new allies to fight an invading force called the Scavs. Rather than limited gliding, the title is built around “true dragon flight,” emphasizing active, decision-based aerial movement where players dive to gain speed, climb, and weave through the environment. Toys for Bob says it was created in Unreal Engine 5 with handcrafted, colorful worlds, and confirms Tom Kenny will return to voice Spyro. The studio and its partners also describe the project as evolving the classic platforming feel by making dragon flight a core part of gameplay, with expansion of exploration both on the ground and in the air. Spyro: A Realm Beyond is planned for spring 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Windows PC, including distribution via Xbox Game Pass.
Toys for Bob CEO Paul Yan said the project is driven by a commitment to “optimistic, joyful experiences,” with handcrafted, colorful worlds intended to invite deep exploration.
Creative director Lou Studdert (via Variety) explained the studio’s design approach: they “dive head first into figuring out what makes that franchise, that character tick,” evaluate what “resonated with fans,” and focus on preserving “the whimsy and that fun”—with dragon play chosen to unify gameplay elements into Spyro’s “base core kit.”
The announcement also teased a more substantial Spyro redesign: Studio comments suggest Spyro has been given an “older look,” including an “enhanced wingspan,” to better support the game’s expanded aerial focus.
The new Spyro project is described as releasing “from developer Toys for Bob in collaboration with Microsoft’s Activision,” positioning the announcement as a broader Microsoft/Activision partnership rather than Toys for Bob alone.
