Fumito Ueda's Long-Awaited 'gen ATLAS' Sci-Fi Adventure Unveiled at Summer Game Fest 2026

Fumito Ueda’s long-awaited next game, previously known as Project Robot, has been officially titled gen ATLAS, revealed with a gameplay trailer at Summer Game Fest 2026. Developed by genDESIGN and published by Epic Games Publishing, the single-player sci-fi action-adventure is set for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Epic Games Store, with no release date announced. The story begins with the protagonist awakening alone on an abandoned planet filled with colossal architecture and remnants of an unknown civilization. As players explore the vast open world, they encounter a giant robot that enables new interactions and access to previously unreachable areas, seemingly tying into the game’s broader mystery. Early footage highlights Ueda’s signature scale-and-solitude approach, including climbing massive robots and controlling them in combat and traversal-like sequences. The announcement marks Ueda’s first project since completing The Last Guardian as a contractor after leaving Sony’s Japan Studio in 2011.
Before its Summer Game Fest 2026 unveiling, gen ATLAS was teased at The Game Awards 2024 under the codename “Project Robot,” with footage of “a lone character climbing a massive machine while a disaster closed in.”
The new trailer synopsis includes details beyond the abandoned-planet premise—mentioning “an ever-changing sea” and “the remnants of some grand design,” and reiterating the setup where a “gigantic robot” helps the disoriented protagonist.
genDESIGN CEO/creative director Fumito Ueda publicly framed the experience as one aimed at eliciting emotion rather than explanations, saying: “We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery.”
Because Epic Games Publishing is funding and publishing the project, Neowin notes it “should mean that a Steam release is out of the question,” while reiterating an Epic Games Store-first release alongside PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
