AIMCo makes multi-hundred-million dollar adjustments across key portfolio holdings

TD Asset Management Inc. expanded its Cenovus Energy position by 595,518 shares in the last quarter, taking its total to 16,995,459 shares valued at about $287.9 million.
Vanguard Group Inc. raised its Manulife Financial stake by 2.1% in the fourth quarter, bringing its holding to 78,317,970 shares valued at roughly $2.84 billion.
Bank of Montreal received mixed analyst commentary during the quarter, with Zacks Research downgrading the stock to a hold while Scotiabank and TD Securities reaffirmed or upgraded their views on the stock.
Norges Bank established a new stake in Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in the fourth quarter, in a position valued at about $958 million, reflecting continued strong interest from global sovereign wealth funds.
Alberta Investment Management Corp (AIMCo) made sweeping moves across its portfolio in its latest filings, deploying hundreds of millions of dollars into Canadian energy and banking stocks. The fund bought nearly 5.8 million shares of Cenovus Energy worth about $143.7 million and opened a brand-new position in Bank of Montreal worth around $143 million, according to Defense World.
The buying spree signals growing confidence in Canada's financial and energy sectors. AIMCo also lifted its Canadian Pacific Kansas City stake by 15.8% and picked up roughly 799,000 shares of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. At the same time, it trimmed its Manulife Financial position by 2.3%.
AIMCo's largest new bets were nearly equal in size. It bought 5,798,511 shares of Cenovus Energy for about $143.7 million, making it the fund's 14th largest holding at roughly 0.8% of the portfolio. At the same time, it opened a fresh position in Bank of Montreal with 810,135 shares, also valued at around $143 million, ranked 15th largest, according to Defense World.
The Cenovus buy is one of AIMCo's biggest single-stock additions this filing period. It comes as other large funds also load up on Canadian energy. TD Asset Management raised its own Cenovus stake by 595,518 shares, bringing its total to 16,995,459 shares worth about $287.9 million.
AIMCo boosted its Canadian Pacific Kansas City holding by 15.8%, reaching 1,350,112 shares. The position now sits at roughly 0.7% of the portfolio and ranks as the 19th largest holding. The increase shows a clear push into North American rail infrastructure.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City links Canada, the United States, and Mexico by rail. It is one of the few railroads with that reach. AIMCo's expanded bet suggests the fund sees long-term value in cross-border freight movement as trade patterns shift.
AIMCo's new Bank of Montreal position landed during a quarter of mixed analyst views on the stock. Zacks Research downgraded BMO to a hold. But Scotiabank and TD Securities reaffirmed or upgraded their own views on the bank, pointing to a split on Wall Street about its near-term prospects.
Despite the analyst disagreement, AIMCo committed roughly $143 million to BMO. That is a strong vote of confidence from one of Canada's largest institutional investors. The fund manages money on behalf of Alberta's public pension and endowment funds.
AIMCo acquired 799,146 shares of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), making it the fund's 27th largest position at about 0.5% of the portfolio. AIMCo was not alone. Norges Bank, Norway's sovereign wealth fund, opened a brand-new CIBC stake in the fourth quarter worth about $958 million.
Meanwhile, Vanguard Group raised its Manulife Financial stake by 2.1%, bringing its holding to 78,317,970 shares worth roughly $2.84 billion. AIMCo moved in the opposite direction on Manulife, cutting its position by 2.3% to 2,269,629 shares. Even trimmed, Manulife remains AIMCo's 26th largest holding.
