Boston Red Sox Place Masataka Yoshida, Justin Slaten on Injured List; Recall Two Prospects

The Boston Red Sox placed designated hitter Masataka Yoshida on the 10-day injured list Saturday after he hurt himself running to second base during a 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to Reuters. Right-hander Justin Slaten was also placed on the 15-day IL, with his placement retroactive to Thursday.
To fill the roster spots, Boston recalled catcher Mickey Gasper and left-hander Raymond Burgos from Triple-A Worcester, KFGO reported. The team also sent veteran shortstop Trevor Story out on a Triple-A rehab assignment.
Yoshida was injured while running to second base on a double play during Boston's win over Pittsburgh, according to Q1019FM. The exact nature of the injury has not been disclosed. He was placed on the 10-day IL, meaning he must miss at least 10 days of action.
The loss is a real blow for Boston. Yoshida is hitting .274 with five home runs and 28 RBIs in 87 games this season. He has been one of the Red Sox's most reliable offensive weapons since joining the team from Japan.
Slaten's placement on the 15-day IL is retroactive to Thursday, which means his earliest possible return date is already a few days closer, according to Northland News Radio. The 15-day IL is used for injuries expected to keep a player out longer than 10 days. No specific injury details were released for Slaten.
With two players heading to the IL, the Red Sox needed fresh arms and depth. They called up catcher Mickey Gasper and left-hander Raymond Burgos from Triple-A Worcester to take their spots on the active roster, according to Mix 92.9.
Gasper gives Boston another option behind the plate. Burgos adds a left-handed arm to the bullpen. Both players had been developing at the Triple-A level with the Worcester Red Sox before getting the call.
Veteran shortstop Trevor Story is also on the move. The Red Sox sent him to Triple-A Worcester on a rehab assignment, according to Reuters. Story has dealt with injuries in recent seasons and is working his way back to the big-league roster. A rehab assignment lets a player get game reps while still on the injured list.
