Studio MDHR Unveils Two New Cuphead Games: 8-Bit Adventure and Hand-Drawn Sequel

At Summer Game Fest 2026, Studio MDHR used a playful puppet-show reveal introduced by Geoff Keighley to announce two new Cuphead projects: Mighty Cuphead Adventure and a separate hand-drawn sequel in early development. Mighty Cuphead Adventure was shown with gameplay in an 8-bit, pixel-art style featuring Cuphead and Mugman, and MDHR said it is being built with technology from the era, including assembly-language programming and specifications aimed at the Sega Master System. The new 8-bit game is planned for modern consoles and PCs, with the Sega Master System also indicated as a platform, while the hand-animated sequel has no release timing and was not shown in visuals yet. Studio MDHR framed the split as an expansion of the franchise into two different directions—one with clearer, playable footage and one focused on craftsmanship that will take longer to show. No release dates were provided for either title, keeping both announcements at the early-stage reveal level.
Studio MDHR co-founder Chad Moldenhauer said, “Craftsmanship is at the heart of everything we do here at Studio MDHR,” adding that the team used its “Special Bulletin” to “peel back the curtain” in a “fun way.”
MDHR said it is working on the hand-animated Cuphead game with outside collaborators “from Toronto’s Stop Motion Department and Continue Agency.”
For Mighty Cuphead Adventure, MDHR emphasized it is “actually built with technology of the era,” and that it is “programmed in assembly language and designed with the exacting specifications of the Sega Master System home gaming console in mind.”
Neowin reported that Mighty Cuphead Adventure will be playable on the Sega Master System “(released in 1985),” not just a stated target platform.
Wccftech described Mighty Cuphead Adventure as a “2D pixel-art platformer” that looks like a Studio MDHR take on a “Mario-style platformer,” and said the hand-drawn sequel will resemble the approach used in the original Cuphead and its “Delicious Last Course expansion.”
